What is the role of saliva in the digestion of food?

Saliva contains an enzyme called salivary amylase, which aids in the digestion of food.

Saliva has many functions in the digestion process as follows:

  1. Saliva which has salivary amylase when mixes with food, initiates the digestion process.
  2. Salivary Amylases convert complex starch into sugar.
  3. Saliva also acts as a lubricant in the mouth.
  4. It helps to swallow the food.
